Friday July 12th Online Workshops

1:00-2:30 pm | Cindy Campbell-Stone - Stories and Songs of Water

Language: English

Level: All levels

There is something that draws us to stories about the water that surrounds us, whether you live by the sea, a lake, stream or a mud puddle. This participatory workshop will focus on stories and songs of water and briefly explore their importance in our lives. Learn a tale or song or two.

3:00-4:30 pm | William Morin- Powaagan: More Peace Please

Language: English

Level: All levels

The Story of the Powaagan, the Sacred Pipe is sacred tool of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas / Turtle Island. It has a long history of "Peace" between tribes, and nations, present in the signing of 'treaties' with settler cultures/governments. When we speak our truth, in the ceremony, in the circle, daily during the treaty signing, our truth is seen. When we share our truth, what then exists between us is Peace.

Saturday July 13th Online Workshops

9:00-10:30 am | Johanna Kuyvenhoven - Storytelling in School: Why does it matter and what might be lost if it is not happening?

Language: English

Level: All levels

Concern about the diminishing presence of stories-out-loud in school, drive this workshop. At the same time, we note the waning use of narrative literature, reading-aloud activity and story writing. Why does this matter? What might be lost? In this workshop we’ll grow our ability to answer those questions and better advocate for storytelling in school.

Participants bring examples of their classroom storytelling experiences. From these and other activities, we’ll outline the ways storytelling events support the teaching and learning. Together, we’ll express the variety of ways in which storytelling contributes to classroom learning life.

11:00 am-12:30 pm | Sylvi Belleau & Ilya Krouglikov - Passeurs en herbe / Pass on: budding storytellers

Language: Bilingual / bilingue

Level: All levels / tous niveaux

Sylvi Belleau from Festilou and Ilya Krouglikov from Berceurs du temps invite you to discover

"Pass on : budding storytellers", a project developed in Montréal with children and elders from two different cultural communities. By interviewing their elders, the children were able to explore the oral tradition of their country of origin. By learning to share these stories and tales from their elders, they then became bearers of the oral tradition. In this workshop, you'll learn about the project, experiment with tools, and tell stories in various languages before discussing your thoughts with the group.
