Ivan J White
Writer, Filmmaker, Musician, Producer = Storyteller
Ivan J White (he/him), Mi'kmaw, from the community of Flat Bay on the west coast of Newfoundland, strives to act as a connector of Mi’kmaw perspectives to the wider world through storytelling.
Ivan focused on Narratology, Indigenous Futurisms, Arts Connection to Storytelling, and Story’s influence on Society during his pursuit of a Master of Applied Literary Arts at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus, graduating in the fall of 2024. He has professional credits with Theatre Newfoundland & Labrador’s Gros Morne Festival, CBCNL (Radio and Web), the Stephenville Theatre Festival. He has worked extensively in his home community through the Flat Bay Band and the Bay St. George Mi'kmaq Cultural Revival Committee, where he directed his efforts in the promotion of Mi'kmaw stories, culture, and community to a broader audience.
As a writer, Ivan has been published in the National Geographic Indigenous Atlas of Canada, the Breakwater Books anthology Land of Many Shores, and Downhome Magazine. He recently participated in the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre (PACT) - Rising Tides Mentorship Program, the Glenn Gould Foundation's Alanis Obomsawin Masterclass - Telling Our Stories, and the Indigenous Storyteller in Residence Program in partnership with TDBank and NL Public Libraries, where he was given the opportunity to grow and network in storytelling spaces.
He is currently the Indigenous Education Specialist with Memorial's Office Of Indigenous Affairs and lives in Shallop Cove with his family.
