As a teacher, administrator and adjunct professor with a creative spirit, Joanne always has a story ready for the telling. Though her career shifts between the local and the global, stories have always been with her, ready to be drawn on whether she was working with children, university students, teachers or community groups.

She has told stories and taught the art of storytelling in Bhutan, China, St. Lucia, United States and Canada. Wherever she works it is not only the telling of stories, but the finding of stories that is a passion; there are always storytellers to be met, tales to be heard and lessons to be learnt.

Stories have been a constant joy throughout Joanne’s life. Her father, a military man, told stories and recited poetry for the whole family as they travelled to various postings in Canada and Germany. Her zeal for stories and words were further developed and encouraged by her mother who read the traditional bedtime stories packed with “good versus evil” as well as doses of fantasy and imagery. Her daughter and husband also share the love of language and can be caught reading and reciting the poems of Edward Lear.

Joanne has published a curriculum guide for teachers and contributes to storytelling in education by including it as a component in her literacy courses for pre-service teachers. She is also a published author of children’s book including Fiddleheads and Sidney, the Grade Three Mouse. As Joanne continues to travel, meet new people and have new experiences, she is certain that new stories will emerge for the telling.
