Janine Tougas
A Métis ally since childhood, Janine is an author who has been developing joint projects with the UNMSJM (Union nationale métisse Saint-Joseph du Manitoba) for over 15 years, including educational games and the play * La chasse au bison au cœur de la nation métisse* (The Bison Hunt at the Heart of the Métis Nation ). Inspired by her high school classmates and supported by the UNMSJM's educational committee, she has also written four young adult novels in the *Collection Voyage* (published by Apprentissage illimité), reflecting the current richness of the Métis community. She is responsible for the design, books and educational materials, translation, and go-management of the *Histoires de la Charrette de la Rivière Rouge* (Stories of the Red River Wagon) project. https://histoirescharretteriviererouge.ca“I grew up in Sainte-Anne-des-Chênes, surrounded by Métis families, and in high school, my classmates came from Giroux, La Coulée, and Thibautville (Richer).” As an adult, my best friend was Métis. It was through this friendship that my awareness of the suffering endured by this people was awakened, a suffering my friend herself had experienced in the form of shame and humiliation.
The Red River Wagon Stories , which I created in close collaboration with members of the Saint-Joseph Métis National Union of Manitoba, are offered as a heartfelt gift to the Métis of my village and to this dear friend. These stories pay tribute to the strength, ingenuity, beauty, and joie de vivre of the Métis, and bear witness to the great contributions the Métis people have made, and continue to make, to Manitoba. My greatest wish is that these stories will illuminate the past, present, and future of the Métis people, as well as all those who aspire to live in a more just and appreciative world.
