About the Workshop

This is an explorative workshop for those with experienced in oral storytelling. Participants will experiment with different storytelling styles. Mimesis Heidi Dahlsveen has drawn on the work of folklore researcher Rikhard Berge (1881 - 1969) who researched and published articles on traditional Norwegian oral storytelling between 1915 and 1933. Berge claimed that there were three styles in which Norwegian folktales were told. With this as a background, Mimesis Heidi Dahlsveen conducted a qualitative study of a selection of storytellers in spring 2017. The material led to the development of a practical explorative method where the storytellers reflect on their own artistic practice.

In this practical session storytellers work on material of their choice. The methodology is intended for folk tales, but you can choose another type of story if you prefer. There will not be time to delve into an entire story. Instead, you’ll explore a scene in different ways, playing and experimenting with storytelling styles, following a variety of strategies given by Mimesis Heidi Dahlsveen. For the workshop, participants need to be prepared to move away from the computer to a small space close by, where they can work physically but still hear what is going on. They also need to bring a story which they can work on.

About Heidi

Mimesis Heidi Dahlsveen is an associate professor in oral storytelling at Oslomet – Oslo Metropolitan University, and member of the executive committee of the Federation of European Storytelling (FEST). She has worked as a storyteller since 1996 both in Norway and abroad. She has participated in a number of international festivals and in two EU projects that deal with oral storytelling. She has sold performances to the cultural rucksack (A National Programme for Arts and Culture in Norwegian Schools) and toured internationally. Her focus is on letting traditional narratives shed light on contemporary themes. She is currently participating in her third EU project: Common future, common ground - a project that looks at how narratives are used to stigmatize and polarize and how narrative can be used in conflicts. She is a member of the research group «Art in society» and co-owner of Skaldskur AS.
