Stories to Remember

Stories to Remember is a two volume series by Laurent d’Entremont writing about the people, the business and the events of his community in West Pubnico.

West Pubnico, MiddleWest Pubnico and Lower West Pubnico are the villages which constitute the oldest Acadian settlement in Nova Scotia. Settled in 1653 by Acadians, Pubnico derives its name from the Mi’kmaq word meaning “cleared land.” In addition to the farm and lumber trade, the villagers continue to rely on the sea as the mainstay of their economy. These villages are located 3 hours drive from Halifax and 30 minutes from Yarmouth.

D’Entremont relates the unique character of West Pubnico in more than 50 stories covering a wide range of topics: the people, the vocational school, the fury of storms such as Edna, old businesses such as the lumber mill and the broom factory. Some of the work situations he knows first hand from his diverse work experience which includes fishing, wood working and managing the local credit union in addition to writing and storytelling.

Kim Kierans, Director of the School of Journalism at University of King’s College, Hali- fax describes d’Entremont’s stories as “rich with detail and colour. At the end of his stories, you’ll be a little wiser and hugely entertained.”

D’Entremont is at ease with storytelling in print. Many of the sto
ries in these 2 vol- umes were published over the past 15 years in the Vanguard, a Nova Scotia newspa- per. In addition, d’Entremont wrote other books; for example, Two Acre Farm, Golden Farm Memories and Meatballs Do Explode. Silver Duncan Cameron, author and educator, praises d’Entremont for his “ sharp eye, a long memory and a charming style.’

The two volumes appeared 2 years apart. The launch of the second volume took place in October 2007 at the Acadian Museum of West Pubnico where d’Entremont is a long term volunteer and noted storyteller.

Copies of his second volume as well as the first, now in its second printing, are avail- able from d’Entremont: laudent@hotmail.com

Cost of volume 2 is $15 plus $3 shipping and handling.
