Celestial River, The

The Celestial River: Creation Tales of the Milky Way by Andrea Stenn Stryer. Little Rock,
AR: August House, 1998. ISBN 0-87483-529-1 HC $14.95 (also in PB for $7.95)

These seven stories about the Milky Way come from a variety of world cultures: Japanese, Greek, Navajo, Australian Aboriginal, Maori, Kalahari San, and the Toba of Argentina. Depending on which story you read, the Milky Way is made of mother's milk, ashes, glowing volcanic rocks, tired stars or a celestial river. It is sometimes a river, a path, a bridge or even a beautiful mantle. It was created in some stories by a god, in others by a human or even a bird. Brief notes on the tales are included, as is a glossary and a bibliography. The book is illustrated with black and white drawings by Wendell Hall.

The size of its print makes it appealing to students in grades five, or even good grade four readers, and its content is for all ages.
