Oni Lasana

Greetings, Bon Jour' & all that good stuff!

I, ONI (oh-knee) LASANA was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with paternal roots in African Khoisan people and in France. My maternal roots are in the indigenous Coushatta tribe of Louisiana. USA. My love of Canada extends to family and friends I have often visited in Toronto. I enjoy learning of the international melting pot and indigenous diversity of Canadian culture.

A professional storyteller since 1994 I have traveled sharing JOY, UNITY and HOPE with a repertoire' of African, American and Caribbean stories, songs filled with audience participation.

Sto'try (poetic storytelling), animated style and historical reenactment programs are enjoyed throughout the USA, Germany, Zimbabwe and Trinidad & Tobago.

AH HA! OH YEAH! and WOW! - modern to folktales are also my forte' with a varied repertoire to delight pre-school to seniors.

As a multi-disciplinary chameleon of creativity, I am also a published short story author and spoken word performance poet, a musician (bass & shakere'), jewelry artisan, songwriter, vocalist, podcaster, performing and teaching artist.

Hailed as the female "Voice of Dunbar" my Brother Dunbar Poetry & Performance Workshop is published in Literacy In The Storytelling Classroom on Libraries Unlimited.

A musical spoken word CD of my signature play, Oni Lasana Doin' Dunbar as 'Lias' Mother, is available to listen on Sound Cloud. The play of the same title, is a traveling one woman musical interactive experience which breaks down the fourth wall and brings American History to life with the prose and folktales of iconic poet & author, Paul Laurence Dunbar. (1872-1906) of Dayton, Ohio. #Dunbar150. Dunbar is the Father of the Spoken Word Movement in America and America's Shakespeare!

Presently, I host a weekly Love Of Dunbar! a literary discussion and performance meetup on Zoom, free for all interested in performing or discovering Dunbar's life, poetry and short stories.  Register:
