A musician and songwriter, Becky Thomas came into storytelling through the back door, after recording an album of stories set to music about the history of Tsay Keh Dene, a Sekani tribe in northern British Columbia whose tales of survival since the 1968 building of the Peace River Dam hinge on both the hilarious and the supernatural. Like the bards of old, Thomas recorded these events to keep Sekani history from being lost to the next generation.
The Sekani stories encouraged her to look into her own Cherokee and Irish tales and before long, Thomas found she was living and breathing the stories everywhere she went. She can now be found in schools, churches and any place where people gather, "telling our stories, singing our songs" to anyone who will listen.
Thomas has a demo of stories developed specifically for public school settings that focuses on issues such as bullying, self esteem and the power of one. Her storytelling albums to date include, "Once Upon A Story" and "Miracles of the North".
Winner of "Best Female Artist" at the Native American Music Awards, her music and stories can be found on itunes and www.cdbaby.com/Beckythomas.
