Holiday Times
Holiday Times by Ella Jenkins (CD). Washington, DC: Smithsonian Folk\ways, 1996. SF 45041. approx. 35 mins.
This was one of several recordings released in 1996 to celebrate The 40 year relationship between children's performer Ella Jenkins and Folkways.
Today's musical groups for children owe a great debt to Jenkins who paved the way with her songs and chants from around the world. The emphasis in Jenkins' work has always seemed to me to be the enjoyment of music from a very young age, and the appreciation for the music of many cultures. Holiday Times offers songs and chants for winter holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Chinese New Year, and more spring than winter - St. Patrick's Day, for children ages 2 -10. Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer are among the familiar songs, but much of the material was composed by Jenkins. Vocals (sung or recited) are by Jenkins, a group of children, and/or Catherine Hall and Guy Guilbert, and there are a few instrumentals
Teachers and tellers looking for extra holiday material for fillers and in-between stories will be able to get ideas from this recording.
