All together now!
Choose a story for Canadian Storytelling Night 2020
Land of Legends: Stories We Share
The newly formed SC-CC Canadian Storytelling Night Committee is inviting suggestions for a story for all of us to consider telling – together and across the country – on November 7, 2020.
Land of Legends: Stories We Share is the theme of this year’s Canadian Storytelling Night.
Storytellers can gather to tell in the weeks preceding or following Nov. 7 to celebrate legends from the land or legends brought to this land, giving us a wealth of stories to choose from. And there’s also a contest to choose a story we all might tell.
“We all come from one world. Don't we all experience the same things in life? Birth, love, death, joy, sadness? Our legends, wherever we come from, deal with these things,” says Rubena Sinha, a member of the committee.
“Legends tend to develop from the stories of people who have overcome obstacles. I think that all people call upon them in times of adversity. They remind us of our common aspirations and challenges,” says Lee Porteous, a west-coast committee member.
So, is there a story we can all tell?
Here are the contest details. We are looking for a story that:
fits the 2020 theme “Land of Legends”, that is, legends arising in our land or brought here from anywhere
is about 10 minutes long
is appropriate for a general audience
is not subject to copyright or for which permission has been given
The story must be submitted in writing and, if a translation from English to French or French to English is available, please also submit that.
The prize for the winning story is ... glory and the recognition of who brought us the story, when it is told at this year’s conference and at all the CSNs!
The CSN Committee with choose the story and it will be performed on the evening of May 28th, 2020 at the SC-CC Conference in Parksville, B.C.
If the person submitting the story chosen will be at the conference, they will have the honour of telling the story at the conference.
But, there’s not much time!
Please send your story suggestions to Susan Charters, suecharters@gmail.com by April 1st, 2020.
Thank you for participating. The CSN Committee is eagerly awaiting your stories!
