CALL FOR MENTOR TO THE EMERGING STORYTELLER AWARD
SCCC is seeking an individual to act as a mentor to a very vibrant and enthusiastic teller from Montreal. Her name is Mafane.
Originally from the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, Mafane first thought of storytelling as a way to alleviate homesickness. After taking an introductory class, she performed on stage in Ottawa, where she was then living. Thereafter, she had the opportunity to work with numerous artists in the National Capital Region. Eager to introduce her native region to people, Mafane takes inspiration in the Indian Ocean’s folklore and music, and occasionally accompanies herself on the bobre (musical bow used by tellers from La Réunion).
She has had the opportunity to perform in various places, such as Cabaret La Basoche, the Maison des auteurs de Gatineau, the Gainzbar and the National Arts Centre. More recently, she participated in the International Storytelling Festival Boca do Céu in São Paulo.Coming from a long line of immigrants from Mauritius, Madagascar, Sicily, Algeria and France, Mafane now focuses her work on original stories about departure.
If you are a veteran storyteller and a member in good standing with SC-CC for at least two years, and you would like to nurture the creative development of this emerging storyteller, please send a one page proposal to: firstname.lastname@example.org no later than February 15, 2015.
Please also include the names of two storytellers who will vouch for your experience and expertise. There is an honorarium of $400.
Anyone in Canada may apply – mentorship has already been carried out very successfully by electronic means. We do encourage “one on one” mentorship when possible. Part of your responsibility is to assist Mafane in preparing a story for the Conference in Levis.TheEmerging Storyteller Committee will announce the Mentor by the end of February.
