New Complimentary Indigenous Membership program with Storytellers of Canada – Conteurs du Canada


As of April 2021, Storytellers of Canada – Conteurs du Canada is proud to share that we will be offering complimentary memberships to all Indigenous Storytellers! This is a new permanent program, and we look forward to welcoming even more Indigenous Storytellers to our organization. 


We recognize Indigenous storytellers as the First Tellers of our country. Offering complimentary memberships to First Tellers is a gesture intended to honour the importance of First Storytellers in our country. This program was developed in consultation with our Indigenous Advisory Council. 


This initiative is one of the ways in which SC-CC is seeking to put the “Calls to Action” outlined in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Report into practice within our organization. Specifically relevant to this membership program is the section on Business and Reconciliation, which calls upon the corporate sector of Canada to commit to meaningful consultation, building peaceful relationships, and ensuring Aboriginal peoples have equitable access to jobs, training, and education opportunities. Equally important to SC-CC are the calls to action around Education, and we hope to promote and support education around reconciliation through the practice of storytelling itself. 


Some of our other initiatives for actively engaging with Indigenous storytellers in Canada include hiring a new Indigenous Outreach Coordinator (stay tuned for a job posting soon!) and introducing new programs specifically for Indigenous tellers, such as virtual storytelling circles, concerts, and professional opportunities. 


How to join as an Indigenous Teller
For Indigenous Tellers who are interested in a free Storytellers of Canada – Conteurs du Canada membership, please register online here and select ‘Complimentary Indigenous Membership’ as the account type. Until our website is updated later this year, you can bypass the online payment by selecting ‘pay by cheque.’ No ID is required. 


If you are already an Indigenous member of SC-CC, you can renew for free through your online account using the same steps.


Please note that the free membership will still need to be renewed each year upon their expiry date.
