Greetings SC-CC Members,
It is with great sadness I share news of the sudden passing of Jan Andrews on Saturday, September 2nd, 2017. She was a master storyteller, accomplished author, one of the founding members of Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada and in 2016 was named to the Order of Canada for all her contributions to the arts.
SC-CC members will remember different aspects of Jan's many contributions and inspirations with storytelling. In particular, I remember her warm hello to new and returning members to conference each year and her opening introduction telling the history of SC-CC. She was keen about the future 2018 conference theme of reconciliation being explored by Indigenous and non Indigenous storytellers and told me she intended to learn Ojibwa greetings to include in her annual bilingual speech.
Jan was a master storyteller who performed across Canada and internationally. She also initiated StorySave several years ago and continued her leadership exploring new technologies for next year's projects. She, herself, is a recorded elder on two StorySave productions.
Jan’s passion and talent helped guide SC-CC along a positive path of energy and compromise as it evolved over the last twenty five years with English and French speaking members from different backgrounds and heritages across Canada. Her deep contribution to SC-CC and the art of storytelling as a friend, mentor and artist will not be forgotten.
Jan will be deeply missed.
