Oro Anahory-Librowicz - Being Born Is a Miracle

Oro Anahory-Librowicz

Montreal's Oro Anahory-Librowicz was chosen as the 2022 StorySave teller! Her nominators write that Oro is "the bearer of a thousand-year-old tradition of Jewish tales, with a distinct repertoire and unique style. Oro has also collected hundreds of Judeo-Spanish songs from women, passed down from mother to daughter. From her native Morocco to the Middle East, passing through Eastern Europe, she restores the memory of the past and makes it present and alive. She generously shares her culture and values and manages to touch the ‘Other’ in otherness, reaching to the depths of humanity."  –– Sylvi Belleau and Selina Eisenberg

Author and professional storyteller, Oro Anahory-Librowicz was born in Morocco into a traditional Sephardic Jewish family. She studied in Paris and New York before settling in Montreal as a professor of Spanish, but she has remained deeply connected to her roots.

“Jews are the People of the Book, and of memory,” says Oro, “a singular people who have maintained their beliefs far from their ancestral land. Their age-old stories have sustained them, allowing them to preserve their identity throughout their exile. With this album, I offer a humble tribute to the countless generations that came before and bequeathed to me tales of wisdom, spirituality and humour.”

With Being Born Is a Miracle, Oro uses music, voice and unique sound mixing to create a beautiful exploration of the theme of exile, and how stories help us all to remember who we are.

This album has two discs: one in English and one in French, with different stories on each volume.
