CONFERENCE 2025 FIELD TRIPS - THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2025
These field trips are mostly walking tours. Whenever possible, transportation will be provided or a taxi can be taken. A couple of field trips require ferry rides (included in the cost of the trip). Please dress for possible rain, fog or cold because weather near the water can be windy and chilly. Halifax weather in June can vary by the hour. Wear good walking shoes or boots.
Please bring some cash (Museum donations, bus, gift shops, treats).
All tours end at the Halifax Waterfront with free time to explore and eat lunch and supper. Or, you can make your way back to campus via walking or bus (see note below on buses).
F1 - Evergreen House, Dartmouth Heritage Museum (limit 25 people)
Time: 9:30am- 12:30pm

Travel: This tour is a 30 minute walk from the university, a 15 minute ferry ride and a 16 minute walk to the museum.
Evergreen House is the former home of folklorist, Dr Helen Creighton. A protege of Helen’s and author of her biography, Clary Croft, will present on Helen’s valuable work in folklore along with a few stories and songs. The museum staff will take you on a tour of the house and tell a few interesting stories about the house and Dartmouth’s history. Visit the exhibit of Helen Creighton, Canada’s First Lady of Folklore, other interesting exhibits, and visit the giftshop for souvenirs.
F2 - Halifax and the Sea at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (limit 25 people)

Price: $12.00 per person
Travel: This tour is a 30 minute walk from the university
The history of Halifax is one of the oldest in Canada. Jon will tell stories and interesting facts about the seaport on the way to the waterfront. At the waterfront there will be a guided tour for the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (MMA) with its fascinating exhibits of the sea including The Halifax Explosion and theTitanic. The MMA has great sea tales to tell. It also has a gift shop. If you wish, you can also explore the ship, CSS Acadia learn about its fascinating history or the HMCS Sackville, the worlds’ last surviving corvette.
F3 - Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (limit 25 people)
Time: 9:30am- 12:30pm

Language: English (with English and French exhibits at the Museum)
Price: $18.00 per person
Travel: This tour is a 15 minute walk from the university.
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is Canada’s sixth national museum. Their mission is to share the ongoing story of immigration to Canada—past to present and coast to coast to coast. The Museum is located in the Pier 21 national historic site at the Halifax seaport where nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada from 1928 to1971. They have many stories to tell. The museum has a gift shop.
F4 -Quaker House, Geary Street Cemetery, World Peace Pavilion (limit 15 people)

This tour is a 30 minute walk from the university, a 15 minute ferry ride and a 5 minutewalk to the Quaker House Museum, then 5-10 minute walks to the other sites along the Dartmouth waterfront.
Quaker House: The first wave of Quaker settlers appeared in 1785. Originally the home of William Ray, a Cooper (barrel maker) Quaker House is considered the oldest standing structure in Dartmouth. Museum staff will share interesting stories and traditions about the Quakers brief history in Dartmouth. There is a gift shop but cash only please.
Geary Street Cemetery: a historic burial ground. Cindy will tell stories about the residents buried there. A ghost story is also in the offering.
World Peace Pavilion: Cindy will tell the fascinating stories of some of the rocks and bricks from all over the world and how they came to be on the Dartmouth waterfront. A song is also in the offering.
Bus Transportation
Walk from the Halifax waterfront up to Barrington Street
From Barrington Street take the #10 or #29 to get you back to campus.
From Barrington Street, take the #1 to get you to Spring GardenRoad / Restaurants / Library.
