Our Lady St. Mary: Medieval Legends and Miracles (audiocassette) narrated by Dr. Robert Bela Wilhelm. Storyfest Classics, 1.996. $1.1..00 90 mins.
In 1905, English scholar and mystic Evelyn Underhill undertook to write, as literary t,ales, a group of medieval legends which she had gathered in Europe. Entitled The Miracles of Our Lady Saint Mary - the tales are presented in the style of a medieval writer. The book has long been out of print, but on this tape Wilhelm narrates some of his favourite stories.
He begins with an introduction to Underhill and her work, quoting her words which call the tales 'The fairy tales of medieval Catholicism." "My object," she says, "has been to show something of the intimate charm of the medieval attitude toward the Virgin Mary, an attitude part familiar, part chivalrous, part devout."
Because of the archaic use of language, the tales require close attention and so are most appropriate for adults, and are probably of most interest to medievalists and those who explore hagiography.Order from Story fest Classics, 1.8934 Rolling Road, Hagerstown, Maryland 21.742.
