Sing A Song of Six Packs
by Donna McCaw. Elora, ON: Oasis Publishing, 1996. ISBN 09680683-0-8. 41p. $10
Anyone who has heard Donna McCaw tell stories will hear her voice ringing true in these original stories. There are ten stories in this collection. Her Dad is quoted on the bookcover as saying, " A buck a story, eh? Not a bad deal."
The stories range in time from 1956 to 1970, and they are based on the real and fictional answers to the question UWhat is the one memory that stands out from your youth?" The memories range from drog busts, to sex, to a pilgrimmage to Montreal in search of Leonard Cohen. The stories are touching, and each has its own voice. They are Canadian stones, but they touch a universal chord in anyone who went through youth and lived to tell the tale.
This is McCaw's first book., and another is in the works. The publisher needs to do something about the drab and 1minviting cover which gives no inkling of the fun and quirkiness inside.
