Sailing the Flying Ship: Stories and Thoughts on Navigating Life by Mary Hamilton
(audiocassette) Frankfort, KY: Hidden Spring, 1998. ISBN 1-885556-05-5. approx. 53 mins. $10

I have alwavs enjoyed what Mary Hamilton does with the stories she tells. Years ago I bought her tape The Winter Wife, and last year, in Vol. 2 No.3, I reviewed her cassette Haunting Tales Live From Culbertson Mansion. But this new tape is my favorite of them all. The liner notes say, "Over the years, [Hamilton] discovered the folktales and fairy tales she told were providing much more than paychecks; they were supplying her with charts and instructions for navigating her life. Here, in the frame story of The Fool and The Flying Ship, are folktales, personal anecdotes, and thoughts on making your way through life.

This piece was presented originally as a keynote speech. The beauty of it is that it can be enjoyed in a number of ways. You can simply listen to it and marvel at the way Hamilton constructed the tale or you can take part in it by stopping the tape at the various points suggested by the teller, giving yourself time to examine certain issues that are raised. You can share it with a group, and work through the discussions as a group exercise. However you use it, you cannot help but appreciate a beautifully crafted storytelling piece that is sure to make you think. Perhaps you'll think about the power of inner voices, the importance of focus, true listening, and taking time on the way through life. Each person will no doubt take from the tape what he/she needs and have a good time doing it.
Recommended for teens and adults. Order from Hidden Spring, 65 Springhill Road, Frankfort, KY 40601. For more information phone 502 223-4523.
