Notes Alive! On the Day You Were Born by Debra Frasier. (video cassette) Minneapolis, MN: Minnesota Orchestra Visual Entertainment, 1996. ISBN 0-9653818-0-3 30 rnins. $19.95
Occasionally I am sent items which are only marginally within the mandate of the SSR reviewing policy. This video is one, but it is such a delightful work that I want to be sure people know about it.
On The Day You Were Born was already a highly acclaimed picture book when it was chosen to be the first of the Minnesota Orchestra's video "story-concerts," integrating 3-D animation, symphonic concert, and narration. The result is a beautiful, almost spiritual look at the natural world welcoming the birth of a child to the accompaniment of Steve Heitzeg's original music.
A creative arts enrichment curriculum is available for use with the video in schools, but you don't even need that to see the lead-in from this lovely video to the telling of personal stories. Beautifully done. Winner of the American Library Association's 1997 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video and several other awards.
Also available from Notes Alive is Nutcracker: The Untold Story featuring Maurice Sendak's illustrations -in 3D animation -ballet, and symphony concert all inter-cut.
