James Leard (B.F.A., Univ. Of Victoria; M.A. Northwestern) was one of the first graduates of the University of Victoria’s Theatre Department and upon graduation he spent a season (70/71) at Theatre Calgary.
Returning to Victoria, Jim was one of the original members of Company One, an early experimental company based in Victoria that toured across Canada making its success with its fresh innovative approach to performance. Making Victoria his home, he continued to perform with every group in the city while teaching at the University of Victoria and Norfolk House school for girls.
In 1981, Jim created The Story Theatre Company to perform as part of a Literacy series in local libraries. The schools became interested and the company was soon touring across Canada and The United States. The company is still going strong after 30 years continues to be based in Victoria and is still traveling across the continent.
Jim has also been busy with acting roles in both Film and Television with roles in COLD SQUAD, THE X-FILES, DAVINCI’S INQUEST, and INTELLIGENCE. He has served on several boards of directors (Intrepid Theatre, The Other Guys, Gotta Getta Gimmick, Blue Bridge) helping to shape Theatre and Drama programs in the Province. He served longest on the Artstarts in the School’s board and spent two years as President.
His writing career includes most of the productions of The Story Theatre Company, several plays produced for The Fringe Festival as well as work for a sketch comedy troupe (The 5 White Guys).
Jim continues his work with The Story Theatre Company, Board of Director’s membership; writing new plays; poetry and children’s stories and is creating new work for the film and television media.
