The companion volume to New Tales for Old, this volume deals with re-workings of four folktales and five literary fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, "Beauty and the Beast, "Jack and the Beanstalk ," and the ballads of "Tam Lin" and "Thomas the Rhymer." The nature of folktales and their surrounding cultural contexts are examined; each story is accompanied by tale type numbers, motifs, lists of re-workings by genre, and author interpretation. There is also an appendix updating the publication of re-workings of the Grimms’ tales explored in the first volume.

This book examines the reworkings and critical interpretation of nine classic folktales and ballads, some of which date back centuries.
