FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

STORYSAVE TO CELEBRATE LAUNCH OF 15TH CD: Written in the Body

A Very Special Project from Master Storyteller, Jan Andrews

Vancouver, British Columbia (July 8, 2016) - StorySave, a program of Storytellers of Canada - Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC), is pleased to announce the launch of its 15th StorySave recording, Written in the Body by Jan Andrews.

The CD’s official launch is at the Storytellers of Canada’s National Storytelling Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia: To Hear and Be Heard: Tales to Link Us All  2016.  This is the 24th Annual Conference of the SC-CC, held from July 7 to 10th. The CD launch takes place on the University of British Columbia Campus, in the Isabel MacInnes Room, at the Walter Gage Residence, 5959 Student Union Blvd., July 8th at 3:30pm. It is open to the public.

The StorySave Program was established by SC-CC as a means of enhancing storytelling’s living contribution to Canada’s oral and literary heritage through the recording of the voices of elders from the Canadian storytelling community on multi-volume CD sets, an audio website, and aired on SC-CC’s very own online radio station: SC-Radio-CC. Tellers selected for inclusion are those who tell out of very particular repertoires, and have something unique to offer.

Jan Andrews has been a crucial artist and leader within the Canadian storytelling community. She was the first president of Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada and founded the organization’s StorySave project. She also served as Artistic Director of two long- running Ottawa storytelling series. She has co-founded an arts education organization, and has produced and performed in countless shows.

Now, at age 74, Jan is releasing Written in the Body, a deeply personal story that combines an historical story with a modern one in a touching revelation about sexuality and one’s life choices.

Jan says of the project, “Performing Written in the Body is scary because it’s intensely personal and yet I am hugely grateful to know this piece is going out into the world. It speaks both of ancient customs and of the forces that have shaped my very contemporary life. Who would have thought that as a forty something I would come out as a lesbian, considering that, as a child, I’d hardly even heard the word? That when I was well into my sixties I would find myself shaken to the core by the realization that I could actually make my childhood dream of being male come true?”

Jo Radner, Past President of the National Storytelling Network says “Written in the Body is the shimmering, irresistible story of life-long yearnings. Andrews’ voice is supple, unforgettable, and perfectly paced for this extraordinary drama of discovery”.

Widely-recognized as a storyteller who touches her audiences with the depth and power of her work, Jan has traveled extensively, telling stories at festivals and in concerts across Canada, in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. She is also an author of books for young people including the award-winning Silent Summer, and the beloved classic Very Last First Time.
